My best experience has been pre-soaking corms for 3-4 hours, throwing them into a flat 1020 tray and covering with soil to pre sprout, and planting out once roots and tiny shoots start growing. In my zone 6b/7a, I use a low tunnel with greenhouse plastic to keep them from freezing over the winter. You can plant any time until very late winter/early spring, but you way need to cover them depending on your zone.
